On Friday, 12/17/2021, Diamond, aka Lil Favorite, asked me to chauffeur her and some friends around D.C. as they did a little club hopping. At the time, I was building a private transportation business, so they agreed to pay me. Shoutout to the friends who support all your endeavors. The group for the night consisted of Diamond, Kashy, Dazia, and, of course, Erica.
As they were working out the details amongst themselves, everyone was easily on board—except Erica.
"Y'all want me to ride in a car with a stranger?" she said, not knowing she was on speakerphone.
Dazia replied, "Girl, he ain't a stranger. Kash and Diamond know him from their job."
Eventually, Erica agreed to park her car at Kash’s house, catch an Uber to the first spot, and then accept my chauffeur services after the rest of the group left the first spot.
When I picked everyone up from the first location, I noticed a pretty, light-skinned face that hadn't been in my vehicle an hour earlier when I dropped them off. I greeted everyone cordially and kept it fake professional, playing the bodyguard role as I asked, "Y'all ready to go to the next spot?"
As we pulled up to the second stop of the night, I once again caught sight of the unfamiliar, pretty, light-skinned face in my rearview mirror—just to see if she’d notice me noticing her. Lol. She didn’t.
As I returned a couple hours later, Erica opened my deep-tinted door first as she was obviously eager to leave the current venue. This time, I decided to speak. After locking eyes with her, I playfully said, "I think you got the wrong car."
Erica replied, "Boy, please," and helped herself to the middle portion of my backseat.
My immediate thought was, She can take a joke. I like her attitude.
As the rest of the girls fussed and explained the shenanigans that had taken place in the venue, I kept stealing peeks at Erica twisting her hair, preparing it for her nightly routine. That view in my mirror was a thousand times better than staring at the Suburban in front of me as we remained pulled over.
Finally, it was time to drop everyone off at their final destinations. I dropped Diamond and Dazia off first, then Erica and Kash at Kash’s house.
Before getting out, Erica asked, "I’m sorry, sir, I had to park on the street, but can you wait for me to use the bathroom and then give me a ride to my car?"
I assured her it wasn’t a problem.
A few minutes later, Erica returned and attempted to get in the backseat. I told her, "This ain’t no Uber ride—you gotta hop in the front seat."
Without hesitation, she complied.
As I watched her step out of my car 30 seconds later, I thought, She’s cooler than she sounded on the phone earlier.
The next day, I asked Diamond, "So, what’s up with your friend Erica?"
Her response . . .
"I mean... she not married..."
One night, my girlfriends and I had plans to go out, but I wasn’t really feeling it. I told them I was going to stay home, but one of my friends called me back, trying to convince me. She said, “Are you sure? We have someone who’s driving us—he owns a driving company, so we’re good.”
I still wasn’t convinced, but instead of riding with them, I told them I’d just meet them there. My friend suggested I park at her house, and from there, she Ubered me to the event.
Once we got there, we quickly realized the event wasn’t what we expected, so we decided to leave and go somewhere else. That’s when my friends said, “Yeah, we’re just gonna ride with Kevin.”
I was like, “Kevin? Who’s Kevin?”
They reassured me, “Girl, he’s cool! He works with us at Facebook.”
Me, being cautious, wasn’t too sure about getting in a car with a stranger, but since it was a group of us and they were comfortable, I went along with it.
We headed to another spot, but an incident happened there, so we had to leave again. As we were getting into the car, I pulled on Kevin’s door handle, and he looked at me and said, “Wrong car.”
I laughed and said, “Boy, quit playing and let me in this car while I wait for my cousin and friends!”
Kevin, being the designated driver for the night, took my cousin and his friends to another event while my friend Cash and I headed back to her house so I could get my car.
Before getting into my car, I asked Kevin, “Do you mind waiting? I really have to use the bathroom.”
He said, “No problem, take your time.”
When I came back outside, I instinctively went to get in the back of his car, but he stopped me and said, “This isn’t your Uber anymore, you can sit in the front.”
That small gesture caught me off guard. He didn’t have to wait, but he did.
After that night, Kevin and I kept running into each other. At first, it was casual—mutual friends, group outings. He asked me out a few times, but I wasn’t interested. But over time, our conversations got longer, our texts more frequent, and I started to see what a great guy he was.
So, I finally gave him a shot. We went on our first date, and the rest is history.
Who knew that a random night out, a reluctant Uber ride, and a guy named Kevin would be future husband? So happy I met the love of my life that December night…
